Bradley has also been changed, to bradleym@eniinternet.com BY THE NUMBERS: In culling the "best of" this year's E-Journals for the forthcoming American Go Yearbook (due out in mid-January), the E-Journal staff realized that we not only published 60 editions of the E-Journal (better than one a week!) but also published a whopping 150 attached game and problem files! Maybe that's why more than 6,000 go players worldwide depend on us every week for go news, review and instruction. Quantity is good, but we're especially proud of the consistent quality of the material produced by our staff of dedicated volunteers and we look forward to continuing to continuing to explore the wonderful and challenging world of go in 2004. As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions at journal@usgo.org TERRY BENSON PHOTO QUIZ WINNER: Terry Benson is this week's winner, correctly identifying Chris Garlock & Phil Straus, playing go at low tide in the Desolation Sound, off the coast of British Columbia at a Hollyhock retreat. The Half a Loaf Prize goes to Eric Osman, who thought he spied Barry Nolin with Phil. THIS WEEK'S PHOTO QUIZ: tell us where this week's photo was taken and you could be the next Photo Quiz winner! Bonus points if you can explain the significance of the game. Check it out at http://www.usgo.org/index.asp WORLD GO SUZUKI WINS 5TH TOKYO SEIMITSU CUP: On December 22nd, Suzuki Ayumi 3p won the 5th Women's Strongest tournament (also known as the Tokyo Seimitsu Cup) against Nakazawa Ayako 5p in a relatively long game of 306 moves. Suzuki, who had to defeat several players of higher ranking to reach the final game (including Women's Honinbo Kobayashi Izumi 5p in the quarter finals), played Black and won by 11.5 points. Game records can be found at igo-kisen.hp.infoseek.co.jp/news.html. - reported by Dennis Hardman NAIWEI AGAIN CHALLENGED BY TEEN: In a match reminiscent of the Women's Kuksu held earlier this year, 18-year old Cho Hye-yeon 4p played Black and defeated defending Women's Myeongin title holder, Rui Naiwei 9p, by resignation after 163 moves. The Women's Myeongin is a best-of-three match, and Cho now leads the series 1-0. In September, Rui defeated Cho to advance to the finals of the Women's Kuksu only to have Cho win her way out of the loser's bracket to play and eventually win the series 2-0. Rui, who just turned 40, has been known alternatively as the "Iron Lady" and the "female demon" when it comes to go. Rui is known to American players because of her work to establish a professional go organization and her participation in the North American Masters tournament, in which she twice challenged her husband Jiang Zhujiu (Jujo) 9p, the title holder. Rui now lives in South Korea. Game records can be found at igo-kisen.hp.infoseek.co.jp/news.html. - reported by Dennis Hardman KGS FALL TEAM TOURNAMENT RESULTS: The Fall edition of the bi-annual KGS Team Tournament was a smashing success, with over 100 teams entered in the competition. The tournament is split into two separate categories, an even tournament and a handicap tournament. Teams choose to represent a chat room in either (or both) competitions. One room is allowed multiple teams, but each player may only represent one team. Each team is made up of five players playing 1st through 5th board against the other teams in that division. The Chinese 361 Team was the overwhelming victor in the top division of the even tournament, with 20 wins to their name against six teams, while Hu's Angels took top honors in the handicap tournament, with 15 wins. Even Tournament winners: Division 1: Chinese 361 Team (Chinese Room); Division 2: Hubris (Chez Hu); Division 3: Paladins (Camera Romana); Division 4: Brettspielwelt (Deutche Ecke); Division 5: The Team that needs no Name (Canadian Room); Division 6: Boubou's Team (Salle Francaise); Division 7: DraGOns (Deutche Ecke); Division 8: Black Smarties (Anivision); Division 9: HuFO (Chez Hu) Handicap Tournament winners: Division 1: Hu's Angels (Chez Hu); Division 2: The Official Utwig Team (English Room); Division 3: HUligans (Hungarian Room); Division 4: xUSSR Team (Russian Room); Division 5: Nous Savons (Salle Francaise); Division 6: HuFO (Chez Hu) - winners' list from Sensei's Library; reported by Ethan Baldridge GAME COMMENTARY: Small is Beautiful If you're pressed for time, today's game commentary on a 9x9 game between two kyu players is perfect. James Kerwin 1P provides the commentary, noting that Black's seemingly natural opening play on the center point was never played in a series of pro 9x9 games covered in Go Weekly a few years ago. Our first bonus file covers how to chose the right joseki with a problem from Get Strong at Joseki, vol 1, by Richard Bozulich, published by Kiseido. This week's very special bonus file is the latest of Yilun Yang's annual year problems, this one for 2004. The E-Journal wishes our readers a very Happy New Year! Hand-in-hand with these are re-evaluations, rethinking, and possible discarding a few old notions. Clear your head time after the haze of food, family, and two many glasses of cheap red wine at too many parties (or the loneliness of too few). And so with my obsessions. It felt great to leave Bob Barber's Chicago tournament undefeated. And yet, no sooner did I finish my Hard Times column reveling in those victories than I felt a greater loss. As I strained to attain dual mastery over the game of go and a would-be book about go, I struggled even more with the fact that play had now become work. I found myself laboring at something that should be a long meditation, a slow unfolding. It was Mozart I think who said "Effortlessly, or not at all." I think he wasn't talking about a lack of passion, or energy, but that you should enter into the work in such a way that you forget all the things that make you conscious of your efforts. So, on the eve of the New Year, let's all resolve to keep the play in go-playing, and the love in all our efforts - that's what it's all about. Oh, and as you see me on the rocky road to shodan in Chicago, Princeton, Arlington or wherever else I find myself playing in a tournament this spring, please be sure to remind me it'll be just as fun to buy drinks for the gang at Rochester next summer-and hey, we're all just playing a game here.
