1996 North American Masters Tournament
Zhu-jiu Jiang, 9-dan, successfully defended the title against
challenger Naiwei Rui.
The format of the tournament was two rounds:
- Challenger Round: round robin for all but title holder.
- Title Match: best-two-out-of-three between winner of
Challenger Round and current title holder.

The title match was played at the 1996 Go Congress, in
Cleveland, OH. Zhujiu Jiang, 9-Dan successfully defended his title against the
winner of the Challenger Round, Naiwei Rui, 9-Dan.
