Jimmy Cha, 4-Dan

Jimmy (Min Soo) Cha was born in 1951 in Seoul, Korea, started playing go at age 7, and was considered 4K from the beginning. By the time Jimmy was in high school he was considered a strong 6D. Jimmy was the leader of the national university team from 1969-1973, and has held the top 5 amateur titles in Korea.

In 1973, Jimmy passed his test for Professional 1D. Jimmy joined the Air Force in 1974 and came to the US in 1976. In 1980, Jimmy was promoted to his present rank of Pro 4D.

Jimmy is the promoter of the Loy Chon Tournament, which is the largest prize fund tournament in China, the first of which was held in 1994. The purpose of this tournament is to provide qualifying games to allow Chinese Pros to advance in the professional ranks. The prize fund for the first tournament was $70,000.
