AGF Teacher Support Guidelines

1) The AGF will fund American non-professional go teachers of youth players or those in institutional settings (prisons, psychiatric or geriatric facilities, rehabilitation centers) on a matching basis i.e. a dollar for dollar match of documented local funds.

2) The AGF will match $15 /teaching hour up to a total compensation of up to $50 /hour for new or additional teaching programs (not replacements).

3) For the second year the match is $10 /teaching hour.

4) For the third (and subsequent years) $5/teaching hour .

5) The maximum match is $1000/year/teacher and $500/class /year.

6) We expect classes of 15 (or an average of 15 over several classes). Smaller classes may receive lower amounts.

7) Some equipment and materials are provided free at the discretion of the AGF equipment coordinator.

8) We will match up to $200 for equipment and books at a suitable level for students. Books are expected to be kept in a location accessible to the students.

9) We will match funds for the purchase of a demo board.

10) We will match funds for small prizes for youth tournaments up to $50/year.

11) On a discretionary basis, the Board may waive the limitations (including the requirement of matching funds) for programs which

  • are in areas underserved by other Go programs
  • serve more students,
  • are demonstrably effective in developing players who participate outside class or participate over time, or
  • draw additional donations from the local community to support the program beyond the required matching funds.

12) Other teaching programs (college, adult, and mixed ages) may apply for matching grants for teaching, books, or equipment. They will be considered and awarded based on the program, community support, and the availability of funds.

13) AGF grants to teachers do not cover transportation costs nor consider travel time.

14) Teachers under AGF grants are treated as independent contractors. The AGF provides 1099 forms as required by the tax code.

15) All teaching programs must submit a year end report to the AGF containing (at a minimum) teacher contact information, the number of students, level of play, basic teaching method, meeting time and place, institutional setting, source of local funds, and a short narrative of the highlights of the year/semester and the circumstances of the class (institutional support/response, community relationship, ethnicity of the players, response of families/players).

16) For IRS reporting all requests for payment must be accompanied by original receipts indicating the matching funds or expenses incurred.
