SCHAEFER WINS QUIZ: Marvin Schaefer is this week's Go Quiz winner, chosen at random from amongst those who picked Kita Fumiko as "Mother of the Go World". Kita Fumiko 8P (1875-1950) was adopted by Hayashi Sano - the first female 4 dan pro and a member of the Hayashi house. Her struggles to please her mother are wonderfully described in the "Art of Resigning" chapter of Nakayama's
"Treasure Chest Enigma". She is the correct answer because (according to GoGod's "New in Go") so many of her student's became professionals - including all of the top female players of the early 20th century. Several of you picked the great Kitani's wife, Kitani Miharu for being the real organizer behind the Kitani Dojo - a good choice. Kitani made pros out of the talented kids that were sent to the dojo - Kita Fumiko actually taught many of her students how to play from scratch - and made them pros. Honda Kazuko 8P was Fumiko's best pupil, and Janice Kim 3P is the mother of two (hopefully) future players. Got Quiz? Send us your ideas for future Go Quiz questions at

THIS WEEK'S GO QUIZ: Black's Winning Ways
In Japanese go books, what's the literal translation for the kanji usually translated as "Black wins by resignation"? Is it "Black wins by resignation," "White submits," "Black wins by non-counting," or "Black wins by center pushing." Click here if you know the answer: One prize-winner will be drawn at random from the correct answers and will be awarded a prize from one of our fine go vendors.

AGA HAPPENINGS: Free Webhosting!
Club websites are not only the easiest way for people to find your club these days, they can actually drive traffic to your meetings. Now, thanks to Calvin Clark, the AGA is making you an offer you can't refuse. The AGA now offers free web hosting for AGA chapters, and Clark will even help create your page as well! Even more exciting, for the first five clubs that request web hosting, he will be donating copies of Microsoft FrontPage 2003 to get started! Calvin joined the AGA volunteer team during the Black Mountain Go Congress, and has stepped up to help enhance the benefits of AGA membership.
Plus, you can take it up another notch and request a email
address reflected to the account of your choice. So whether you already have a web page that you just want linked to the AGA Chapters List at, just need an ISP to host it, or have technophobia and need help from the start, we're here for you. Please send your requests to and copy Thanks Calvin!
