The 2005 Summer Go Camp

Another Great Success

The 2005 Eastern AGA Go Summer Camp was a great success, thanks to the efforts of many people. Our Go teachers included Feng Yun, Bruce Wilcox and Rob Muldowny. Christie Wilcox was camp director and Bill Phillips, Chris Amorosa and Karen Jorden were counselors. David Dinhoffer organized the camp and coordinated support from various sources.

The camp was held at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. The college provided dorms, playing rooms, meals, a swimming pool and some unusual places to do Go problems.

Camp Activities

The kids played Go and had lessons each day. Feng Yun explored the San Ren Sai and Chinese openings with the students. Bruce Wilcox introduced them the Great Wall fuseki and taught about living shapes using dessert names (cookies, brownies, ̩clairs, baklava and cupcakes). The kids learned to make their opponents' cookies crumble rather than letting them complete them to make good shape.

We introduced the kids to some new words that were linked to Go Concepts. The word "syzygy" (the opposition and conjunction of heavenly bodies, as in an eclipse) was introduced along with the Go Concept of San Ren Sai (3 star-points in a row). Another extraordinary word: "floccinaucinihlipilification" (the act of calling something worthless) was introduced to help the Go players to find worth in their moves. One camper, Grace Phillips, introduced us to the "Box of Doom" ‰€“ her name for the cross-cut.

Many Thanks

The camp has its friends who donated money, time and Go sets that support the camp and its campers. We greatly appreciate it!

THANK YOU ALL
