Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

A risky overplay.
Black is too strong in this area for White 1. With 2, 4, and 6, Black has put pressure on White and made good shape with the side group. After 10, Black need not worry about any further loss of real territory from White's invasion. And White has to be very careful with his eye-less and base-less group.

Much better.
White 1 is a standard way to lightly reduce Black's framework. Compare the position through White 7 with White's position in the previous diagram.

Also better.
White 1 can also stress the left top area. Of course, but then Black can take more of the right side with 2 and 4.

Again, compare the position through White 13 with White's position in the original diagram.
