Problem diagram.
Black's response to White's marked play?

Source:

Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Correct
Black 1 looks really thin. White has no alternative but to play 2. The game continued through 5, after which Black's thin, weak-looking bottom stones now look strong. And the Black cutting stone neutralizes White's thickness.

White alternative
Pushing through with White 4 fails brutally to Black 5.

Natural, but slack.
After Black 1, White simply pushes out. The result is acceptable to White. Black is much weaker than in the game line.
