Problem diagram.
Black plays.
Source:
Qi Jing Zhong Miao #493 , an ancient collection of mostly kyu level life and death problems.
Analysis:
Myron Souris
This kind of semeai problem, in which both sides have an internal eye and shared freedoms, is more an exercise in simple logic than tedious reading. To win, Black simply creates a bigger eye in the corner than White's at the bottom. After that, Black fills all but 1 of the shared internal freedoms, captures the corner stones, and then ruthlessly fills White's remaining liberties.
Solution follows
(or click here to download SGF)
Correct.
Black 1, which threatens 2 eyes, is the only move.
White 2 prevents 2 eyes, and Black 3 forms the required 5-point area.
White 18 is a pass. To put White into atari, Black captures the
corner stones with 19. See the next diagram.
To more easily see these variations, use the SGF.
Continuation.
White has no choice but to try to fill Black's eye space with 20.
But with 25, Black wins the semeai.
Failure.
Black 1 only gives a seki, because White can force a 4-point eye in the corner through Black 7.
Variation.
White 2 at 7.
In the previous diagram, if Black foolishly tries to maintain a 5-point eye with 7 here,
White forms an eye in the corner with 8, and Black dies.
See the SGF for the follow up moves.
Failure.
Black 1 lets White take the key point at 2. After White 6, Black only has
a 4-point eye, which the earlier diagrams show only gives a seki. Note that
Black eventually has to fill in at A.
