Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Correct.
White 1 is the correct direction. With 5 White plays solidly. Black has to pull out his stones with 6, while White 7 and 9 produces a strong shape. White has reduced the influence of Black's wall on the right to almost nothing.

Horrible.
White 1 is a big mistake in direction. White 3 can no longer set up such a strong shape as in the main line. And if White captures a stone with 5, Black forces with 6, and with 8 creates a nice moyo using the wall on the right.
