Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Failure.
Black 1 is the wrong direction. Black 5 takes the corner along with some territory, but White's capture of the marked stones and White's enormous outside influence is a Black loss.

Black variation.
The tesuji sequence starting with Black 5 doesn't work here. After White 12, Black cannot protect the 2 crucial cutting points at A and B.

Correct.
The loose ladder from the direction of Black 1 works much better Through the sequence to 13, Black doesn't make any appreciable territory, but Black connects the side and corner stones. As a result, Black reduces White's left side influence from that in the other lines.
