Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Failure.
Black 1 is a very bad move here. If Black follows the normal joseki with 7, White pushes through with 8. Black cannot avoid a bad result. White can make 2 forcing moves with 14 and 16, and then play the big move at 18.

Black variation.
If Black captures with 13, White 14 forces Black into a low position on the right side.

Better.
Black 1 is the correct response. White can extend with 2, but Black's low position in the lower right blocks White's potential down the right side. Black can calmly play the nice move at 3 and aim for moves like A. Black is developing at a nice steady pace.
