Problem diagram.
White plays: A, B, or C?
Go World #4, Nov-Dec 1977, p. 56
Solution follows

Correct.
By making the center group strong with 1, White will have free movement everywhere else.
If Black protects his left side group with 2,
White is free to extend to 3.
Now White is well positioned to reduce the effectiveness of
Black's upper right with plays like A or B.
Bad timing.
White 1 is a mistake in timing.
With 2 and 4, Black exploits the weakness of White's center group.
White must meekly run out with the center group through 11.
Then with 12, Black takes the huge point on the right side.
White will have a difficult time winning this game.
Also bad timing.
White 1 is also an error in judgment.
As before, Black will jump on the weak White center group with 2 and 4.
Thanks to Black's attacking moves, Black 10 now builds a large framework.
Compare this position with the 1st diagram above to see how much worse White is here.
