Good timing.
After the joseki in the upper left corner, Black should always
be watching for a good time to spring the contact play at 1!
White can block at 2, but the result turns out good for Black.
Connecting at 4 looks normal, but Black can slip down the left side with 5 and 7.
If White presses down with 8, Black has the severe cut at 9.
The ladder starting at A is bad for White, so White would take a huge loss here.
White variation.
White can capture the invading Black stone at 4 to avoid the
previous diagram, but Black takes the corner with 5.
Through 8, both Black and White have safe groups, but
Black can then take the large territorial point at 9.
The general result is satisfactory for Black.
Better for White.
White can vary even earlier at 2 to keep White's stones connected,
but Black has settled his shape in sente through 8.
Black can use sente to play the huge bottom point at 9.
The difference between White or Black playing first at the bottom is enormous.
