Kato Masao (age 11) vs. Shiratori Sumiko 3p

Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Bad timing.
Black 1 is the correct direction of play, but the timing is not very good. This variation is what the 11 year old Kato played as Black. White switched to 2, and left the lower left stone as a light play.

Correct.
Black 1 is the correct timing. Standing up with White 2 is natural, but now Black's pincer at 3 is severe. White's 2 stones are not as light, and Black has robbed White's group of a solid base. Black's development is ideal.

White variation.
To avoid the previous diagram, White will probably dodge to 2. But then Black can successfully erase the White stone from below with 3.

Black variation.
Note that Black should avoid pressing from the top with 3, instead of following the previous diagram. Black's 4 stones are now somewhat overconcentrated. Furthermore, White may later pull out with A, after which an invasion at White B becomes possible.
