Kato Masao (age 11) vs. Shiratori Sumiko 3p

Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Big, but not best.
In the game, Kato (as an 11 year old) played Black 1. Last week's problem (from much earlier in this game though) suggested this as the best move to put pressure on the White stone. But now, later in the game, the right side has become more important. White 2 takes the initiative on the right, while leaving the left side stone as light. White 4 seizes the big lower right corner. With 5, Kato plays in the wrong direction again. Through 11, White has raided the corner and settled his lower group in sente. And Black really only has about 10 points of territory on the lower right side.

Black variation.
Deviating from the previous diagram with Black 5 would have at least recovered something out of the position for Kato. Black could have then belatedly taken the strategic point at 7.

Correct.
Black 1 is the best point on the board. Black moves out into the center while simultaneously threatening the weak White groups above and below. White has a difficult fight ahead.
