WEEK 11 - moving to the larger board

MATERIALS YOU'LL NEED: 19x19 demo board, class Go sets in all three sizes.

MOVE TO FULL BOARDS, GIVE THEM THE CHOICE OF EITHER 13X13 OR 19X19.

1. Explain the names we call the lines: 3rd, 4th line, etc. Explain what the 4-4 or star point is, the 3-4 point, the 3-3 point. Have them name other points to make sure they get the hang of naming intersections this way.

GIVE THEM: three basic rules of fuseki :
1. Play on the corners first. For now, the 4-4, 3-4, or 3-3 point.
2. Then play on the sides, staying on the 3rd or 4th lines.
3. Space out your stones. How far? talk a bit about efficiency, of the idea of making a 'connect the dots' picture first, then later drawing in the 'lines' with inter stone moves.

Explain safe extension rule. (if one, jump two, if two, jump three, etc)

Play an example fuseki for them on the demo board.

VOCABULARY WORDS:
FUSEKI : the opening phase of the game
STAR POINT: the 4-4 points
LINE NAMES: naming the grid points by how far the lines are in from the edge.
