This week, it is helpful to have a second go player come in with you, both to play a demo game, and to go around and help the kids figure out when the game is over, counting, etc. The kids will need extra help their first few games to figure these things out. MATERIALS YOU'LL NEED: 9X9 demo board, class Go sets. EXPLAIN TERRITORY: Make sample territories on the demo board and practice counting. EXPLAIN THE OBJECT OF THE GAME OF GO: is to get more territory than your partner. EXPLAIN ABOUT NOT HAVING TO ACTUALLY MAKE SEPARATE EYES. JUST NEEDING THE SPACE TO MAKE EYES (7-8 pointS or more being generally alive) - it'll take them awhile to get this concept.
PLAY AN EXAMPLE GAME ON THE DEMO BOARD: Play against your second go player. Each player should talk about what they are thinking when making a move, about filling dame points, about not playing inside your own territory unless there's a reason to, about passing and when the game is over, and counting. Explain about komi and white winning ties. Don't set up a ko in this first demo game!! Have them play in teams of 2, so there are only 5-6 games going and it is easier to supervise and help them in their first games.
