WEEK 12 - playing the corners

MATERIALS YOU'LL NEED: 19x19 demo board, class Go sets in all sizes.

1. Review fuseki rules.

2. Explain the shimari (enclosure)

-3-3 point. All alive by itself.
-3-4 point. Needs one more stone for corner territory . Using white stones, show the
two kinds of common 3-4 enclosures- the knight's and the one-point enclosure.
- 4-4 even with the knights or one point extension, still needs another stone to call it territory. Show this using black stones.
That's why white (3-4) will rush to enclose, but because black needs two more moves, a disadvantage when big points are to be taken in the opening, black (4-4) will take a more leisurely approach to enclosure.

3. Approaching the corner - the knight's approach, the one point approach.

Why not an attachment? (show why)
Why not a diagonal ( show why)
