WEEK 2 - illegal moves, game etiquette

MATERIALS YOU'LL NEED: 9X9 demo board, class Go sets

1. Ni Hao! (that's hello in Chinese) Explain about the different names for Go. Chinese: Wei Chi, Korean: Baduk, Japanese, Go. Go comes from "Igo", or the "way of go", as in Japan go is seen as a path to higher or more spiritual realizations.

2. WHERE YOU CAN'T PLAY - SUICIDE MOVES

Explain there are illegal moves, called suicide moves, that are not allowed. For example.

CAN'T PLAY IN THE CENTER HERE- because there are no liberties, the stone cannot breathe

CAN'T PLAY THE SECOND WHITE STONE HERE

You CAN make a suicide move only if you will make an immdiate capture. White to play.

GO OVER THE BASICS OF PLAYING CAPTURE STRATEGIES:

1. COUNT LIBERTIES. Groups with less than three liberties are said to have a "shortage of liberties", and should be defended if yours, attacked if your opponent's.

2. LOOK FOR THE WEAKEST GROUP. ATTACK IT. Play a sample game with the class. Have them start each game with a cross cut pattern.

3. Move to playing capture 5. This means the first person to capture 5 stones wins the game.

EXPLAIN GO ETIQUETTE
1. ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR OPPONENT at the beginning of the game.
2. PLACE THE STONES ON THE BOARD POLITELY (Don't move them around)
3. NEVER COMMENT ON YOUR OPPONENT'S MOVES except to say "nice move!"
4. ALWAYS THANK YOUR OPPONENT FOR THE GAME
5. ACCEPT RESIGNATIONS WITH GRACE (explain it is always OK to resign).

VOCABULARY WORDS :
SUICIDE MOVE - illegal move into a place of no liberties
SHORTAGE OF LIBERTIES - groups with three or fewer liberties.
