About the Program

In 2003, the AGA initiated a new program intended to bring new tournament-tested youth players to the AGA. If you are working with youth players or have considered working with them, then this program may be able to provide funds to help you. The grant period goes from September 2004 to June 2005 to correspond with the school year. The committee plans to process the grant applications by the end of October, so that the groups will have enough time to work with the new players. Except for special circumstances, we do not plan to issue any grants after the end of December 2004 for the 2004-5 grant period.

If you believe that you can bring new youth players (18 or younger) up to playing 19x19 handicap Go in an AGA rated event, then you can request funds from this program to help your efforts. If you think you can prepare four players, you can ask for $250; eight players is $500; and we have a ceiling of $1000 for 16 (or more) new youth players. This grant program is different than previous AGA programs in three ways:

(1) there is no fund-matching required;

(2) teaching the new players is expected to bring them up to a level of interest and ability which will allow them to successfully play in an AGA rated, 19x19 handicap Go tournament; and

(3) we anticipate contact between instructor and new players to last throughout the year, to help the new players prepare for tournament play. Please note that these funds are not available for subsequent fund-atching requests to the AGF.

It is our hope that we will be supporting you to not only have a successful program this year, but that we will be helping you to build an ongoing program in your community and for your Go Club. The young players, who come out of the program this year, can continue to progress next year and they will be teachers and models for the new players to come. In a few years, at least some of them will be among the strongest players in your club.
