Schedule of Major Events
Most go tournaments in North America are weekend events run by local go clubs. These tournaments provide an opportunity for rated competition, social interaction and modest prizes and are perfect for new and experienced players alike. For a list of tournaments in your area visit the Open Tournaments and Workshop Calender.
Major championships are held throughout the year and around the country. Some, such as the Maryland and New Jersey Open, are unrestricted tournaments that welcome all comers. These events usually feature a large tournament field and (sometimes) significant prize money. Other events may require players to satisfy certain conditions to register--youth championships have an age requirement, while the North American Fujitsu Cup is an invitational event restricted to sixteen of the top players on the continent. Several of the major tournaments are used to select American or North American representatives to international championships, where the tournament sponsors provide expenses-paid travel overseas for the winner to compete in championships such as the Fujitsu World Championship and the World Oza.
