North American Fujitsu Qualifying Tournament

History

The World Fujitsu Cup is sponsored by Fujitsu Limited, with a top prize of ¥15,000,000. The field always includes several of the world's top players.

The first Fujitsu Cup, in 1988, was a 16 player knockout tournament, but subsequent years it has been expanded to a 24 player knockout tournament with 8 additional players seeded into the second round. The participants for this tournament are taken from the Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese professional Go scene joined by representatives of North and South America and Europe. The latter three players are selected by running local preliminary tournaments.

This is the local qualifier to send one North American representive to the World Fujitsu Cup.

Purpose

The winner of the North American Fujitsu qualifying tournament represents North America in the World Fujitsu Cup each year.

Selection Criteria

Invitations are issued in the following order, until 16 slots are filled:

  • Top five seeds from last year
  • Eligible professionals
  • North American citizens from each region with the highest American Go Tournament Circuit points
  • Selection by the AGA president if needed to round out the field

Eligibility requirements

US (or Canadian) citizenship. AGA (or CGA) member. 6 dan or above.
