Ōtake Hideo
We lead off with the Meijin Title between Ishida Meijin-Hon'inbō and the challenger Ōtake Hideo 9d. With the score tied at 1-1, the match resumed on October 1/2 and Ishida went ahead. Two weeks later, Ōtake evened the score but on October 22/23, Ishida was victorious and the challenger's back was against the wall. On October 29/30, Ōtake survived his first kadoban to force a seventh decisive game next month.
On October 9, professional players Ashiba Katsumi 4d and Inoue Machiko 1d arrived in London for a 4 day visit of simuls and lectures at the London Go Centre.
The East Coast Championships took place in Philadelphia on October 12. Takao Matsuda, 6d was the Champion and he, along with Jerry Goldin 1k, the Kyu Champion, would face their West Coast counter parts for the U.S. Championships.
On October 18 the "First International Telex Go Match" was won by China 2-1. Matsuda lost to Wang Ming Wuay and Larry Brauner lost to C.S. Shen. America’s only victory was on board three, Al Hodis defeating HP Chang.
Takagi Shōichi 7d defeated Kojima Takaho 8d in the decisive game of the 19th Prime Minister's Cup on October 23. This event, for players ranked 5 dan to 7 dan had already been won by the two finalists in the past, Takagi in 1969 and Kojima in 1970. No typo here - Kojima was promoted during the course of the tournament.
