Guo Juan gives this background for the player with White in this game: “Pete Schumer is a well known go player in USA. I felt his love for go right away when I met him for the first time. Normally, I remember go players by their faces, because there are so many go players and the western names are too difficult for me to remember. Pete has a face with a sweet smile, all the time, which makes it easy for me to remember him :)”

A student of Guo Juan, Rich Chalmers, has more words about Pete: “Pete Schumer is a professor of mathematics at Middlebury College in Middlebury VT, where he also teaches a class on go. He is active in the AGA and the local Vermont go scene, a frequent club attendee and organizer of Vermont go tournaments. An avid traveler to Japan, Pete has attended both the Nihon Ki-in and Osaka Go Camps. He has had sabbaticals in Tokyo and Kyoto, travels throughout the country, and contributes cultural go-related articles to the AGA E-journal. Pete is an incredibly kind, considerate, and positive person. It is always a pleasure spending time with him.”
