Ing Foundation Professional Teaching Program
Welcome to the Ing Foundation's Professional Teaching Program. This is intended to be a permanent grant program funded by the ING Foundation to strengthen the quality of go playing in the United States while helping both AGA Chapters and our US Go Professionals. This policy is intended to provide guidance on how to become involved, what the program is supposed to accomplish, and what is expected from the participating Chapters. The program is an incentive to AGA Chapters to promote go actively in their communities, bring in more youth players and better train all their members.
Objectives:There are three main program objectives: 1) to provide a direct benefit to AGA Chapters by supporting the opportunity of having US professionals personally teaching go to small groups of players; 2) to improve the benefits for AGA members and strengthen the connection between the AGA members and US go professionals; and 3) provide opportunities for US go professionals to directly share their skills and knowledge with an expanded base of go players and increase their student base by reaching more American go players and AGA members.
Goals: The initial goal is to schedule at least 6 events hosted by established AGA Chapters, within the first 6 months of the program, where each event involves at least one US go professional in a workshop-type environment for 3 or more consecutive days.
Initial Program Budget - FY2008: $6,000
The funding for this program is provided exclusively by the Ing Foundation. In order to demonstrate that the AGA is responsibly managing these funds, we are using a formal application process ensuring that participating Chapters meet certain criteria. It is critical for an interested Chapter to present an organized plan and a realistic budget for the professional event and to prepare a report afterwards. A projected budget must be submitted with the application form for each event. Grants applications should not be for more than $1,000 and these funds are to supplement the fees to be generated by the event. The grant is not intended to be the sole or majority of the funding for the event. Organizers should plan for the grant to provide about one third to one half of the total budget. The application needs to address local resources to host the event and the proposed arrangements with the professional.
Eligibility:
To be eligible to participate in the initial program, AGA Chapters must demonstrate that prior to January 1, 2008:
1. it has been registered and fully paid for at least the last two years;
2. have a minimum of 5 paid AGA members,
3. hosted at least 3 go-related events over the prior 24 months. (e.g., AGA-rated tournaments, workshops, public outreach programs)
Program Management
The most common event format is a workshop for one or more professionals, divided into periods of game playing, game analyses, lectures, go problems, etc. For this program, the recommended workshop length is 3 days, although it can be longer. Plans must include a youth teaching component and those with a higher element of youth will be more favorably considered. Chapters should plan for a minimum of 12 participants to make the application competitive and to meet the objective of exposing more American go players to professional teaching.
Application Process
Grant applications for this program can be submitted at any time although the event schedule may need to accommodate our funding resources and other go events in the US. Check online at usgo.org for the calendar of events to see what is going on in your neighborhood on any given date.
Attached is the form that must be used to submit an application. Questions regarding the application process should be directed to the program coordinator before submitting the form. The budget proposal can be submitted in any format as long as it clearly presents a plan of action and a budget of all income and expenses of the event. The use of the grant for professional fees is a material factor to address in the applications.
Apply for a Professional Teaching Grant
US Go Professionals
Chapters are responsible for contacting the US professional(s) of their choice and planning the events. Contact information for the US professionals is available on our website at usgo.org. The Chapters need to work out a proposal between them and the professionals for the schedule, transportation, lodging and fees before the grant is submitted. The AGA will not be an intermediary between the professionals and the Chapters, unless circumstances require such support.
Event Promotion
This activity is extremely important to ensure the success of the event. The AGA wants to support these events with appropriate promotion. The promotion plans need to be defined in and form a critical part of the application. If the Chapter's application is approved, the AGA and the Chapter will undertake to promote the event in the AGA's EJ, on the AGA website and through the Chapter's website, local media and other means.
Reporting Results
Another key aspect of program management is reporting on results. Just as the event will be promoted beforehand to encourage people to attend, it should be equally reported immediately afterwards. After the event all event hosts need to submit a report to the Program Coordinator so we can adequately document to the ING Foundation a successful program on a national scale.
