The Foreign Players Association in Japan held a tournament this month. Mannfred Wimmer, of Austria, was undefeated in the top section, which included Jürgen Mattern of Germany and Americans James Kerwin, Richard Dolen and Gerry Rogers. The second division was won by James Davies. Finishing second was a 13 year old 3 dan from Santa Barbara - Michael Redmond.
Takemiya Masaki was leading 2-0 over Ishida Hon'inbō when the third game took place on July 1/2. He won that game, but Ishida survived kadoban, winning the fourth game on July 8-9. However, the younger Kitani disciple became the new Hon'inbō with his fourth victory on July 15/16.

Kobayashi Kōichi 7d won the first Shinjin-Ō title with consecutive wins over Nakamura Hidehito 6d on July 14 and July 22.

The National Team Tournament, pictured below, was won for the first time by Urawa on July 21.
The Woman’s Amateur Championship was won, for the second time, by Okamoto Noboko.
