Seven dan table champions and 11 kyu table champions competed Tuesday for the 2025 Lightning
Championships in one of the largest fields in recent memories.
In the Dan playoffs, Yuxiao Wang 5 dan (at left) proved to be the best quick player, upsetting James Sedgwick 6 dan to reach the final against Ting Fen Yin 7 dan (right). Although he trailed on time, a group capture and careful defense forced the 7 dan to resign.
The Kyu field appeared to be going more true to form, with both 1 kyus reaching the semifinals. However, Patrick Sun 3 kyu (below left) upset the apple cart, making the final against Andrew McGowan 1 kyu (right) . Speedily maintaining constant pressure and a slight time advantage, Patrick finished his opponent off with a 
snapback and then an attack on a large dragon. Technically , Andrew’s flag fell as he looked for a way out, but the game was fairly won.
