A Washington, DC favorite, the annual Pumpkin Classic was held October 25 with 27 players
competing to be 3- or 4-game winners and take home a pumpkin for Halloween. Richard Duan (4d) went 4–0 in the dan division, taking overall first place. Richard (pictured third from right) is a student at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and president of the Go Club there.
Other 4-game winners were Dawei Xu (7k) (shown receiving his pumpkin), Gary Smith (9k), and
Xavier Barrett (13k).
3-game winners included Zhiyuan Zhang (5d), Chang Xu (4d), Ryan Gurtz (3k), Hyungwook Lee (4k), and Betsy Small (13k).
Gary Smith has been delivering the pumpkins since the days when the event was run under the NOVA Go Club. A search of the E-Journal archives revealed that Yuan Zhou (7d) took home the first-place pumpkin in 1993 — and the tournament has run every year since, except during COVID.
