Zhaonian Chen 2P captured the title at the 50th Maryland Open over Memorial Day weekend, finishing undefeated at 5-0 against a stacked field that included six 7-dans topping the field of 44 players. Chen’s perfect score gave him clear first place ahead of Yiyu Zhang 7D, who finished second at 4-1, with Justin Teng 6D (3-2) in third.

Meanwhile, at the Chicago Open, DoHyup Kim 8d also ran the table, finishing 7-0 to claim first place in a field of more than 100 players. Haoran Wang 7d took second at 4-0, followed by Puzhu Wang 5d (5-2) in third.

In San Diego, Evan Tan 6D bested Yiyao Hu 7D in the final round to claim top honors; Siyuan Fang 8d was second and Hu was third in the 20-player open section; another 20 played in the handicap division and on Saturday, six played in the beginner’s event. The Tan-Hu game was a rematch from the California State Championship last November, which Hu won.

All three tournaments were part of the nationwide Memorial Day Tri-City series linking events in Maryland, Chicago, and San Diego, for the second year in a row, with live top-board coverage streamed throughout the weekend by the American Go E-Journal. The nearly ten-hour final-day livestream culminated in game reviews and commentary hosted by the EJ’s Chris Garlock alongside James Pinkerton 5D. Livestream production design by Daniel Lambert.
