More Results from Memorial Day Weekend Go Tournaments

As previously reported, top winners at last weekend’s tournaments in Baltimore, Chicago and San Diego included Michael Chen 2p at the 50th Maryland Open, DoHyup Kim 8d at the Chicago Open and Evan Tan 6d at the San Diego Go Championship. Here are reports on the remaining prize winners and section champions from the three Memorial Day weekend events.

At the Chicago Open, a field of exactly 100 players was led by DoHyup Kim 8d, who went undefeated at 7-0. Haoran Wang, Puzhu Wang and Eric Yoder all finished 5-2, while Heqi Yin and Paige Lemaster finished 4-3. Additional division winners included Guyang Cao (3-4d), Jiaqi Zhang (1-2d), Zhizheng Wang (1-2k), Tim Fursa (3-4k), Benjamin Parrott (5-6k), Mark Norton (7-8k), Alicia Seifrid (9-10k), Daniel Park (11-12k), and Rodrigo Setti (13-16k). Second-place finishers were James Funk (3-4d), Diego Guerrero (1-2d), Elias O’Malley (1-2k), Aaron Soley (3-4k), Exir Kamalabadi (5-6k), Paul Canfield (7-8k), Ari Patin (9-10k), Samantha Short (11-12k), and Jonathan Bickel (13-16k). Honorable mentions went to Michael Wang and Bob Barber. Mark Rubenstein and Albert Yen organized and directed.

At the 50th Maryland Open in Baltimore, tournament director Todd Heidenreich and organizer Keith Arnold presided over a 44-player field topped by Michael Chen 2p, who captured his sixth Maryland Open title with a perfect 5-0 record. Yiyu Zhang 7d finished second at 4-1, followed by Justin Teng 6d, Frederick Bao 6d and Qingbo Zhang 5d at 3-2.

Additional Maryland section winners included Dongha Lee 4d (A), Luc Thomas 2d (B), Arthur Wang 1k (C, Kyu Champion), Robert Qi 5k (D), and Zhiquing Qian 9k (E), who posted a perfect 4-0 record. Other top finishers included Chang Xu 4d and Ashish Varma 4d in A, Inha Lee 7k and John Gipson 5k in D, and David Chen 11k in E.

Special Maryland prizes included the Go Ambassador’s Prize to Michael Battaglia for traveling from Toronto to attend, the Fighting Spirit Prize to Jeremy Liu Wachsman 25k, and the Gregory Lefler Prize to the Feng Yun Go School.

At the San Diego Go Championship, Evan Tan 6d claimed the Open title with a perfect 5-0 record. Siyuan Fang 8d finished second at 4-1, followed by Yiyao Hu 7d and Jasper Liu 6d, also at 4-1, while Yihan Guo 6d and Hoon Jo 6d finished 3-2.

Handicap Section winners included Xingang Huang (Section 1), Steven Hu (Section 2), and Anna Zhou (Section 3). Other top finishers were Jerry Ho and Billy Liu in Section 1; Juwon Choi and Lester Lanphear in Section 2; and Richard Xiang and David Baran in Section 3.

In the 13x13 Beginner Section, Leyton Howell took first place with a 4-0 record, followed by Jayden Hong at 3-1 and Marcus at 2-2. Enrique Garcia organized and directed.
