The year began with the London Go Congress. The eight round, four day event took place at the London Go Centre and attracted 138 players from 37 countries. A Japanese visitor, K. Hirama 6d went undefeated to win the event - he had finished second in the All Japan Student Championship last year. Robert Rehm 4d, from the Netherlands was the top European finisher. A notable result for us old KGS hands was Steve Fawthrop, 4k champion from Birmingham - Dr Straw himself.

You will recall that Fujisawa Shūkō was leading two games to one in the first Tengen Tournament. Pictured above, we see Shūkō, left, confirming his 9.5 point win the fourth game over Ōhira Shūzō 9d and securing the title. A Kidō reporter observed of Shūkō, "Just when you forget about him, he suddenly appears and does something big." Stay tuned...
