Zheng Cup resumes in Irvine, CA

Chris Garlock | Published on 3/28/2023

After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Zheng Cup Tournament is back this year, with its biggest prize pool event. It’s scheduled for April 15-16 in Irvine, California.

Registration is now open for the tournament, which features five bands and six rounds of AGA-rated games. $4,000 in cash prizes are up for grabs, with $1,500 to the winner of the Open Section. “Plenty of trophies will be awarded to each section's top six players,” says TD Kevin Chao. Free lunches will be served as well on both playing days.

Prior to the pandemic, this tournament usually drew around 80 participants, but Chao says that “With this event being the first one in more than three years, and with the record high cash awards available, we may have over 100 players for the first time ever!”

The Zheng Cup Tournament is organized by Michael YiXian Zhou and sponsored by Mr. Jingwei Zheng, who also sponsored the previous six Zheng Cups.  Kevin Chao will be the tournament director.
