Oceanside, CA, resident David Baron 6K emerged victorious at the second annual California Over-65 State Go Championship this Sunday, clinching the title after a series of tie-breakers among the top contenders. All three leading players finished with a score of 2-1, showcasing the tight competition that characterized the day's matches. The tournament, which spanned three rounds and featured handicapped, AGA-rated games, was held at the residence of Ted Terpstra, former president of the San Diego Go Club, which also sponsored the event.

In an event marked by camaraderie and friendly competition, participants and spectators alike were treated to a special homemade 15-spice Mexican chili, courtesy of the host. Reflecting the spirit of the tournament, there was no entry fee, ensuring a focus on fun and the honor of competing for the title rather than monetary rewards.

The battle for supremacy saw Arunas Rudvalis of San Diego and Steven F. Burrall from Sacramento securing second and third places, respectively. Burrall, a 3-dan player and former West Coast Director on the AGA Board, received special recognition for his dedication to the game, having made a notable 500-mile journey along Interstate 5 to participate in the tournament.

The event also served as a mini-reunion for three former AGA Western Region Directors, sparking engaging discussions on AGA policies and reminiscences of past times. The tournament provided a perfect backdrop for sharing tales from the days when AGA ID cards were essential for tournament participation, highlighting the transformative impact of the internet on the game.

As the competition wrapped up, the participants, many of whom are seasoned veterans of the American Go Association, enjoyed a memorable sunset over the Pacific Ocean, adding a picturesque end to a day filled with strategic battles on the Go board. The California Over-65 State Go Championship stands as a testament to the enduring passion and community spirit that defines the senior segment of the Go community in California.
