Seattle Go Center Monthly Ratings Tournament

This is a great way to play some intense face-to-face Go! Three rounds, Japanese rules, 45 minutes per player plus byo-yomi. You do not have play all 3 rounds (just tell the Tournament Director your plans).

There's no tournament entry fee, though the Go Center membership policies apply: age 17 and younger free, first 10 visits free; otherwise, $5 for one-day membership (see http://www.seattlego.org/membership/ for other options). And you need to be a current AGA member -- see https://www.usgo.org/members/login to join or renew. You can join / renew in person at the Go Center, but please come early for that.

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp, and the first round starts at 11:00. If you come before 12:30 and register, you will probably be able to play in the second round, which starts by 1:30 (but may start sooner).

Seattle Speed League - March!

Every Second Saturday at Seattle Go Center, join us for Speed League! Three rounds of fast-paced tournament Go, without the burden of excess thinking time. At 10 minutes + 3 periods of 20 seconds byo-yomi, these games are not rated by the AGA, but they *are* a lot of fun!

Register in person, 1:15 - 1:45 PM. First round starts by 2:00. If you're running late, call us at 206-545-1424 and we'll try to pair you in. The third round is usually done around 4:00 or 4:15.

Yuan Zhou North Carolina Workshop

The tenth North Carolina Workshop with Yuan Zhou is set to begin Friday evening, March 22, at 7:00 PM, continue all day March 23, and finish up Sunday March 24 at 11 AM.

This year the workshop will be at The Marshall Institute, 1800 Tillery Pl # I, Raleigh, NC 27604. The room is large enough to accommodate up to 20 participants!

As many of you know, Yuan Zhou (www.zhouyuan.com <http://www.zhouyuan.com>) is a long-time Go teacher based in the Washington, DC area. Mr. Zhou is skilled at teaching students of all levels. There will be lectures, timed play, and recorded game analysis. The previous workshops we had were great successes.

For Triangle Go Club members, the cost is $80.00. The cost for non-Triangle Go club members will be $130.00 for the entire workshop. The cost for Triangle Go Club students (18 and under) is $50.00.

Tentative Schedule:
Friday: Welcome, and an evening friendship game (7:30pm to 9:30pm). Yuan Zhou will TD and pair the games.
Saturday: Morning lecture (9am to 12pm). Review workshop participants' games.
Lunch Break (12pm to 1pm).
Afternoon lecture (1pm to 5pm). Review workshop participants' games.
Dinner break. (5 pm to 7 pm).
Evening lecture or simul exhibition depending on interest. (7pm to 9pm). Pro game review and rank evaluation.
Sunday: Morning lecture (9am to 11am). Pro game review and Lecture.



Yuan Zhou (American Go Association 7 dan) was born in Tianjin, China. Tianjin is a major city in the northern part of China, near Beijing. His father taught him to play Go at the age of six, and a year later he won the Tanggu District Junior Go Championship. After this auspicious beginning, Zhou began professional Go training while he was still seven years old. He was twice invited to represent Tianjin in the All China Prodigy Cup.



In 1989 Zhou immigrated to the USA and joined the American Go Association (AGA), became a US citizen. Zhou was the president of the University of Maryland Go club, from which he earned a BS in Electrical Engineering, and became increasingly involved in AGA events, winning many Go tournaments. Please see the list below for Yuan Zhou's 34 US Go titles. Zhou was also elected to be the AGA board of directors in 2005.



Zhou is one of the top competitors on the American Go scene, winning the Eastern US Open, one of the biggest US tournaments in 1992. He also won New Jersey Open, one of the biggest US tournaments, four times. Twice he has also won the Maryland Open, another major tournament that attracts strong players. Zhou placed in the top ten many times in the US Open, North American Masters Cup and the North American Fujitsu Qualifying Tournament. These tournaments involve the strongest North American Go players and include pros. In Zhou's Go career, he has defeated pros many times, including five times in even tournament games: Hak Soo Kim 6p in the 1996 Fujitsu, Xuefen Lin 1p in the 2001 Eastern Oza, Huiren Yang 1p in the 2009 & 2014 North American Masters and Feng Yun 9p in the 2011 SAMG World Team Go US team Qualifier. Zhou also won the US Pair Go Championship four times. Zhou represented USA in international tournaments many times (WAGC, Korea Prime Minister Cup, World Pair Go Championship, etc).



In 2009, Zhou represented USA in the 4th Korea Prime Minister Cup World Go championship in Jeonju, Korea and finished 5th place.



In addition to his competitive successes, Zhou has became a popular teacher and lecturer, frequently giving lectures and teaching lessons at various Go clubs in the Eastern US region. He has also published many books. Zhou resides in Germantown, Maryland, USA.

Salt City Tournament

This is a 4-round AGA-rated paired tournament. Cash prizes for the top three finishers in our A Division; all other participants will get to select a new go book or other go-related prize at the end of the day.

Registration is from 8:15 to 9:15 AM; the first round begins at 9:30 AM. Registration fee is $15, or $10 for students high school age or younger.

Free refreshments will be provided, including our tournament's traditional Problem Cake. All playing levels are welcome. The school is wheelchair accessible.

Seattle Spring Tournament 2019

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with three rounds of intense tournament Go!

This is one of Seattle's three big tournaments of the year, with cash prizes, plus book prizes and equipment prizes, and special prizes for youth. Three rounds, 45 min. + OT, Japanese rules.

The Open Section has all even games, and is limited to the top 8 players who want to play in it. First place in the Open Section wins a $150 cash prize (as long as there are at least 4 people in the Open Section.) There will be no second prize.

The Handicapped Section will have book and equipment prizes for players who win three games. The Youth Prize for players younger than 18 is $50, divided equally among the youth players who win all three of their games. Youth players also can win book / equipment prizes.

Entry fee: $10 general admission; $5 youth and voting members. Register in person, 10:00 - 10:45 sharp. First round 11:00 AM, second round 1:30 PM, third round 3:30 PM. You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director your plans.

You can call 206-545-1424 if you will be late. If you call in, your clock starts 10 minutes into the first round; and if you're not present after 30 minutes, you forfeit. The Go Center will be ordering lunch for delivery (probably pizza) as the first round is ending. If you come before 12:30, you probably can play in the 2nd round.

This is an American Go Association rated tournament, and AGA membership is required; please make sure your membership is current. You can join the AGA or renew online (or in person at the Go Center, but please come early to do that). More info on membership at www.usgo.org/join-aga-today
